what's in the studio

In the first stage of the oil portrait of Hannah, the figure has been established, but the brush strokes are very loose, the paint is extremely thin, and the likeness is generalized.

In the second stage, there is now thicker paint on the figure, and the patterns of light and dark have been established. The figure should now retain the backlit silhouette even as more detail is added later. I have tried to show the color intensity of the late afternoon as well as the generalized light.

In the third frame I have started working more on the likeness, and as I add detail to the head, I simultaneously add more color and detail to her body. I want the figure to take shape underneath the dress.

In the last stage I have added all the specifics of the area surrounding the figure. The darks in the foreground are actually stones, and the light area becomes the sunlit flowers. All modifications to the figure are amplified. Every element of the finished portrait - the body position, the expression, and the lighting - come together to portray the joie de vivre of Hannah
